I've had great luck with Lingo and would recommend the service. Voice quality is great, number availability is awesome. After 2 years, I just discontinued my landline and the port over was easy and quick. I had about 2 days of downtime in the last 2 years. Customer service is slow, but I only called it once for a very minor billing issue in which I had made a mistake. Recommended!

First of all, this is my first ever review of ANY service. I've never done it and I don't intend to do it again except I'm strongly motivated. I''ve been with Lingo since June 2005 and have recommended it to over 20 friends who have signed up and have never complained about it. My wife moved down from Canada and we had to call our friends in Canada and W.Europe at a cheaper rate. She told me about Lingo and I didn't believe her the first time regarding the monthly price .We were using Verizon like any one else, and the monthly bill was always high. We would get charged for calling "Regional Long Distance", even some places that were less than 3 miles from our house. Their freedom package, advertised for a certain price would be twice that amount with useless and senseless taxes they never told you existed. Next we moved to Cavalier, after we were 'tricked' by their low price plans advert. Again, it was the same story as Verizon. We signed up for Lingo after much assurances from my wife. I was waiting to tell her "I told you so", which I've never been able to do since we signed up 'cos I've never had cause to. We transferred our number with ease. Set up was like a child's play. Voice quality is good. Features are top of the range with no additional charges -3 way, call-forwarding, call waiting, etc, which other carriers would charge you for. Lingo was the first I know that provides voice mail messages forwarding into your email box if you activate it. This is very pleasant and good 'cos I spend most of my time in the Library and all I do to access my messages is to go to my email and play all messages on my laptop!! To overcome phone jacks problem in the house, we got wireless phone that are in vogue now. You only need to hook one up to the Lingo box and simply plug others to the electric outlets in the bedroom, basement and other rooms. No phone wires or jacks to worry about. We have used Panasonic, Vtec and Uniden but none of these was able to conference until we stumbled on GE. With GE, My wife and I could be on the phone at the same time when calling our mutual friends in Canada/London. With issue of no dial tones that some reviewers brought up, first check your internet connection. If you don't have a connection, then your phone will not work. When we were using Verizon/Cavalier, there were times we had no dial tones for hours on end only to be told that they were doing a maintenance work. The only aspect I've found not pleasant though with Lingo is in the waiting when you call Customer Service which I believe will improve with time. This is not peculiar to Lingo alone. You will be lucky enough if you got to speak with a human being when you call some corporate outfits.....you speak with computers!! .....so why complain Calling Europe and Canada easily has saved us a lot of money. I could call my friends without thinking twice about my bill. I could call ANYWHERE at ANYTIME in the US without having to pay more than $25 at the end of th

Had issues with VRU systems as well as calls that required me to enter options or account numbers. The system did not recognize the entries. They could not correct this issue. Customer service was the main reason I dropped this service. First, I think they have maybe 1 or 2 operators available at a time because it takes at least 30 min before you can talk to someone. Once you get someone, you have to verify 3-5 items before they will help you. Security is a good thing, but theirs is ridiculous. They send a survey with every call, but from my experience, they do not pay attention to what you put in the survey. Would not recommend this service to anyone.

Router devices plugs in-line to home network. Install straightforward and trouble free. Added features definite plus and low price great ~$23 w/tax/mo. However, put it closest to modem to ensure network resources are seen by all PCs. Adjustable bandwidth a good thing. One minus, limited phone exchanges means that you may not be a local call to your neighbors or office

Although I haven't had this very long I have made many calls without a problem. I do have to dial my area code for a local call, but you don't have to dial "1" before the number much the same as my cellphone. The sound quality is excellent on my end however the person on the other end does hear a slight echo. Lingo said I could keep my current land line number which is why I decided on Lingo but this turned out to not be possible because I live in BFE aka a rural area. So, I will have to inform everybody of my new number which has the same area code but will be long distance call for anybody locally. Another disappointment was finding out that the Lingo adapter is only recommended for no more than two telephones. So, if you want a house full of phones you'll need to have a cordless system with multiple handsets. My house is currently wired for a phone in every room (7 phones). Now, I'll have many useless jacks. Overall, it seems to be a great way to save money on phone service which is my goal, however you need to consider some of these minor setbacks I encountered and see if they apply to your situation.

I have used Lingo for over 1 year. I had stuck with them during poor service times including one bad network box. Today, they called me to tell me that I have been using the "unlimited" service too much. I am not a typical user, so I must upgrade to a business plan or be canceled. They are giving me 14 days to leave or be upgraded. I have a teen at home who likes to talk, but it would have been nice to have them explain that we have been using more "unlimited" service than they would like us to use. When talking to customer support during my problems and as they kick me out, I have to speak with someone who speaks poor english from India. Well, forget them. So much for long term customer....Upgrade to SunRocket for me. At least when I call Sun Rocket with questions, I speak to an American.

1 out of 10 calls complete to Mexico. Always the same answer from tech support "working on it" or "I've escalated", but never fixed and never a call back. Am looking for a decent Mexico unlimited plan. LINGO SUCKS and I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND to anyone calling Mexico

I lived in Europe for 10 years, prior to being transferred back to the States last July (2005). I was looking online for VoIP providers and saw that one had unlimited calling to Europe. As my wife is Swedish and all of our friends are in Germany, this was a no brainer. I don't know if the people having issues have crappy, low bandwidth, internet connections, router problems, never selected the box online that allows the ATA to maximize bandwidth for voice quality, etc...but I have yet to have any problems with this service. My wife is on the phone to her family numerous times per week, I call my friends weekly in Germany, and we also have a universal number in another part of the US for my Teenaged son to receive calls from his mother and her parents. I have excellent service on all fronts. As I have not had a problem requiring Tech support, I cannot comment on waiting times. I would and DO recommend this service to coworkers, friends, etc. I make sure to ask them if they have a nice high speed connection first. I look forward to my next transfer back overseas, and having a US phone number wherever I go. (Can actually be cheaper than using the host nation phones, as most charge per minute for local calls.

I wrote a review a couple of months ago and promised an update - I couldn't be happier. Once I was happy with the service I ported my number over, it took about two weeks. I have not had a dropped call and the sound quality has been very good, the odd echo but that's it, certainly better than my cell phone. Even when I was having trouble with my internet bandwidth the calls were fine. As long as you follow the setup instruction and go from the modem to the ATA and then to your router/PC then the ATA ensures the call gets enough bandwidth. Fortunately Comcast have now fixed their problem. The $40 a month savings are great too. I've recommended Lingo to all my friends and a few are starting to take the plunge.

I took the Lingo service for the European free calls - prior to Vonage having the same service. The adapter was on the outside of my network, so was unaffected by our (light) internet traffic. Voice quality was simply terrible. There were many calls which were simply unintelligable - particularly international. I cancelled after 2 months, moving to Vonage - when I found another major problem with Lingo. You have to cancel 10 days prior to the end of the service period (at which time you lose service), otherwise they charge you for the full next period. So even though I called 4 days prior to the end of the period, I was charged for a full month of service that I did not receive. Apart from being borderline illegal, it's just a terrible policy. So even though this seems like an inexpensive service - it actually costs you more. Run screaming rather than choose this service.
