MagicJack receives an unfortunate number of negative reviews... and that may be partially their fault due to their laziness in doing little to educate their customers, their poorly designed website, and relatively poor support (they do have occasionally decent chat though). But the service...or voice quality is pretty good and consistently good. If that isn't (or was not) your experience, either you were having a bad day or you are doing it wrong (hint: look at your Internet service before blaming mJ).

I purchased a Magic Jack Plus on Black Friday, which is the only time I have seen it on sale. I would not call it easy to set up, but it wasn't that bad, either, as long as you are able to carefully follow directions. I did NOT have to call or contact customer service. I did not import an old phone number -- I chose one of the ones that Magic Jack offered (and I got a good one that is easy to remember). I had to set up the system by connecting to my computer, but once set up, I was able to connect it directly to the router and a plug. Then I plugged in a wireless phone (with 4 handsets), and it works fine. I have to admit -- I'm not a heavy user of my home phone. I wanted a home phone to use when I plugged in my cell phone to charge. With 4 handsets, I have phones all over my home within close reach. The ONLY problem I have had is that sometimes when I get a call from one particular number, they can hear me, but I can't hear them. Once we figured out what was happening, I just call them back immediately and it works fine. That is the only problem I have experienced. Voice quality is good. I have a good Internet connection, and that probably helps.

I started working from home last year and needed unlimited long distance. Did some research and thought Magic Jack would be a good solution. Purchased the upgraded device and attempted to install using the instructions provided. Ran into a couple of problems and tried to get Customer Support - not available. Just found written information from other users. Finally got it installed and working. From the beginning had weird noises during conversations or would drop the calls. Thought it might be the phone, but got a new one and it was not the phone. About 3 months after installing, lost all connection, purchased a new Magic Jack upgraded device and reinstalled. Continued to experience dropped calls and loud noises during conversations but got used to it for the price. Recently my work computer blew up, I thought it was a problem with the computer. Took it in and had it fixed. Yesterday my work computer which is plugged in to the same router as the Magic Jack stopped working again, the Magic Jack just had loud screeching on it and will not reset. I believe the Magic Jack device went bad again. I will not be replacing it with another one. Purchasing 2 devices at $70.00 each and paying for 2 years of service within a year and not having good service and lots of dropped calls NOT WORTH IT!!!

Magic Jack is a joke I ordered the newest MJ and look-out. It was a joke trying to get it set up and never could. You cannot speak to a direct person everything is on-line by email or text. I've spent hours online attempting to get it to work. Don't waste your money.

Magic Jack is absolutely horrible, I have spent hours upon hours in chat with their "NON-LOCAL" tech support; uninstalling, reinstalling, changing/removing/reconfiguring internal computer settings, only to have to uninstall reinstall it again (It should actually be called Magic Joke!!!)..... After spending countless hours in tech support chat I came to find out (from a local phone company) that Magic Jack will not connect to small/rural phone companies that may have a slightly higher connection rate. They just refuse to connect the call, but they won't ever tell you that, the call just "rings and rings", only to go to some sort of "call cannot be connected at this time" message..... I have no real way to verify their refusal to connect to rural phone companies, but the service doesn't work with them so you do the math... Just don't do it, "it's a Total RipOff!"

Although I still use MJ because of the low cost, the customer service is foreign(India I think) and terrible. MJ has NO phone CS, only online chat. If the CS rep doesn't like what you are asking, or if you spend too much of their time, they will disconnect you! Also MJ is not very sophisticated. If you buy a product and use it under 1 email, you can never switch emails! They do not have the capacity to change your service from one email address to another! How hard can that be? I was told I would have to trash my MJ device and buy another if I wanted to switch emails. Can you believe that!!

Be careful of MJ's terms of service. Not all outbound calls are included. Customers must purchase prepaid minutes for some calls, including in our case, calls to a friend we call frequently. Our friend is served by a typical traditional rural telephone company. Chats with customer service are like communicating with a robot.

VISITOR/PROVIDER FEEDBACK:

Comment by Sylvia on 6/2/2013 : I tried out Magic Jack from Futureshop for 3 weeks but returned within the 31 day return period. There is no Canadian portability at all. They will offer Canadian telephone numbers at $10.00. There is no 911 even if you want to pay for this service. Technical Support does not live on this planet anywhere. Good luck trying to get hold of either a person or a computer generated response. And their phone numbers are very secret. It doesn't take 1-2 minutes to set up - more like 45 mins. My router is in the basement so all phone calls must be within a few feet of your router. There is no ability to add extension phones which would ring elsewhere in the house. Going to try out VOIP.MS which has all of these features that Magic Jack doesn't.

Comment by Mikey on June 30th 2013 : I have nine(9) phones throughout the house. All of which work just fine using the house wiring.

Overall, the service is at a good price. Customer service is at the bottom of any telecom service I have used so far. If nothing is wrong with the network and everything is stable, it works OK i can make calls and receive calls most of the time. However, some local calls becomes long distance and Magic jack cannot explain why. So some of my local friends have to use their cell phone to call me. That uses their call time minutes. Some calls that are local I cannot call. Some how it is rated as long distance and Magic Jack cannot explain why nor would they even look at it with a trouble ticket. The customer service is totally useless and just repeated the same message that I need to order long distance to call a local number. The whole purpose in getting magic jack is so I do not need to pay LD. If I have to pay LD to make a local call, that defeats the purpose. Fortunately the number of local calls that got turn into LD is small enough I can use my cell phone to call. At one point in time the magic jack failed, It took me a total of 5 calls to customer service, 4 escalation to their super tech, 3 download to reload my pc and magic jack to convince them the magic jack has failed and it should be replaced. I pay for the regular magic jack. However, the shipping cost of the replacement unit is half the regular price of magic jack. I feel like I had pay for the new magic jack all over again. because I bought the 5 year plan, would be an awful waste to let 4 year service paid go so I ended up paying the heavy shipping. Magic jack has lots of improvement to go. However, it seems to be the cheapest voip on the market for now.

General Comments: I have a Magic Jack (original type) about 4 years now, and it only works through the USB on the computer. Occasionally, I find it off, and when I do, I just unplug it wait about 5 seconds, and plug it back in and it reloads itself in less than 30 seconds, and I'm back in business. I originally bought it to eliminate my long distance phone calls. We bought a cell phone about 8 years ago to carry with us in the car, but instead of paying a monthly bill, we buy minutes. Then near the end of the year, we buy $10.00 worth of minutes at 10 cents a minute in order to carry over our balance. Then, we had a landline phone in the house that was costing us $30.00/mo. and were having problems with it, so when I recently bought a Smart TV, I needed a router to go with it, I decided to go with a MAGIC JACK PLUS, and everything (router, magic jack, 3 remote phones with chargers and answering machine, and one years service) cost me a total of $240.00. I've been using it for about 3 weeks now and have not even had to reboot it or anything. I still use the other one on my computer. Had my landline phone number assigned to the magic jack plus. Now, I can leave the computer on or off, and it makes no difference on the house phones. When it's time to renew the service on the old magic jack, I'll just cancel it, because I don't need both of them now. Rating Comments: Ease of Ordering: Did not order, bought it all at the local radio shack-- About a 3.0, because I had to make up my mind and made two trips to the store. Ease of set-up: This wasn't too hard as the instructions were pretty plain, and if you take it one step at a time, no problem. I had never did this before, so didn't want to mess up and probably wasted more time re-reading the instructions than actually doing it. Features available: 4.0 Having an older Magic Jack, I did a little experimenting after I finished with the Magic Jack Plus installation. I had a Galveston number on the old one, and had my landline number on the new one and my computer is on Cable. I called from the Magic Jack to the Magic Jack Plus to get the ringers as loud as I wanted them. Sound quality: 4.0 Better than most cell phones. Reliability: Sort of hard to rate as I haven't had the Magic Jack Plus but about a month, but so far no problems. The old one would fail sometimes when the computer would download updates to programs. If no dial tone, just unplug for about 5 seconds, and plug it back in and wait approximately a minute for it to automatically reload. When I registered mine on the computer, it automatically transferred my phone numbers to the addresses on the monitor dialer from the old Magic Jack. Since you can turn the computer on and off without disrupting it, the only other problem that I see, is how often you have electrical problems and then not being too experienced with a router, don't know what to expect. I asuume that soon as the power is restored, it would reload itself. I'll give it a 4.8 and hope my guess work is good. Customer service: What service? I never called them, and I registered it by plugging it into the USB port of my computer. Most items like this, when you need them, it's a problem to find a number to call. I can't make a good call on this one so am giving it a 4.5. Value for money: This is a hard one to rate, because I wanted a good router for my new tv, and I figured three phones with the answering machine would be sufficient. For an additional $10.00, I could have gotten 4 phones instead of 3. I'm going to give this one a 4.8, because the reliability of my old one has been so good. Sincerely, Lloyd.
